Sealants & Fluoride Treatments

What are dental sealants and fluoride treatments?

A Dental sealant is a thin plastic coating that is applied to the grooves on the chewing surface of the back teeth where most cavities occur. A dental sealant forms a shield that protects the tooth from decay. Fluoride treatments are used on a patient when the dentist feels that a child or adult has a fluoride deficiency.

Dental Sealants

Daily brushing and flossing usually eliminates most of the food particles and bacterial plaque that builds up during the day. But plaque also forms in the grooves and crevices in our mouth. A dental sealant is an invisible resin which is applied to the tooth surface to prevent tooth decay which results in cavities. Made of clear or shaded composite resin, sealants are painted onto the tiny grooves and depressions in the molars. It fills in the crevices to keep germs, food particles and plaque out of the grooves. It is an inexpensive and painless procedure that will protect your teeth.

Fluoride prevents tooth decay. It is a natural mineral that is found in food and water. Fluoride strengthens your tooth’s enamel, making it harder for bacteria to cause cavities.
